Day 2: Reef Walking / Helmet Diving Experience

by lakwatserong tatay

Our first sunlight at Boracay......we were greeted with very high coastline.....our first actual day would be a jampack day to us...because we will try the two of my dream activities in Boracay...the helmet diving / reef walking and driving an ATV uphill....During our first while strolling around Station 1, there someone approaches us, who offered us this kind of activities, although my dream activity was Parasailing....maybe on my next visit, i will not really missed it out and do it together with my wife & kids...^_^...
Hightide coastline of Boracay...
We were scheduled early morning that day...for our first activity....the helmet diving / reef walking...we were 30 minutes ahead of meet up time at Station 1...so what we did we take a dip for few minutes upon waiting for our boat that will bring us to the dock area for our activity...
Station 1 Coastline....
Btw....we got our services..from Boracay Island Hopping & Water Sports Adventure...courtesy of Kuya Ruel...we got a great deal for our activity that day.....^_^
Family photo opps @ Station 1
After almost 30 minutes of swimming in the coast of Station 1, our boat ride arrive and most of the tourist adventurers is complete...we started boarding it and cruise the Boracay seawaters....Here are some our photo opps while cruising up to the dock area for helmet diving....^_^
my father, my sister and sister-in-law....^_^
Of course, yours truly wont miss the opportunity....im with my brother....^_^
one....two...three....smile...^_^
What if we try this small sailing boats....hehehehe....sarap siguro...pero sigurado mahal...^_^....
Boracay waters......
Upon arrival on the docking area...we had our family photo opps with props.........^_^
photo opps again...^_^
Before doing this activity the dive masters orientering us first on what to do's and don'ts while on reef walking / helmet diving...we also signed a waiver....^_^... i do hope our helmet diving experience will be good...hmmmm....

Thing to remember in Helmet Diving : Make sure that you personally understand every word that the dive instructor told your group:

1. Memorize the hand signs for "ok", "not ok", "up", "stop"...and many more...
2. Always place your hand in side or front of your helmet so that the water will not enter. If it does, just hold the helmet back into the right position and the pressurized air will automatically force the water out.
3. Don't be too excited going down. Descend slowly as guided by a metal ladder, as the diver will guide you to the sea ground upon last step of the metal ladder. Descend slowly because you will feel the pressure in your ears, which could be really painful, if this thing happen, insert one of your hands (but don't forget to continue holding your helmet by your other hand), inside your helmet pinch your noise, close your mouth, and exhale. Air will go out from your ears. You may do this as long as you will feel the pressure.
***note: Air must go out through your ears not from your nose nor your mouth, but if the pressure really continues it is much better to call the attention of your dive instructor and give the proper hand signal that your needing help.
4. Don't lose to your sight the divers, that will give you signals from time to time, it could be checking you if your alright, or giving some instructions or its time to take your photo and video opps..
5. Don't be too excited walking on the reefs, be cautious and always walk beyond it's boundaries.
6. Last, prayers would be my first and last thing to do...in everything that im doing...^_^
my last signature...hehehehehe...
This helmet weighed about 10kgs but according to our dive instructor, it would just we around 2kgs underwater....so if you want to try this helmet better try it underwater or else...you will know what will happen to you...^_^.
The 10kgs. helmet....
After the orientation, and some additional briefing and preparation of helmet together with the air pressure line attached in the helmet, it's time to submerged....ok...this is it...^_^....i'm not really good in swimming but i do have enough courage to do this..just for the experience...^_^.
photo opps muna...bago yung helmet...^_^
The reef walking / helmet diving would last from 20-30 minutes depending where do you get your services. The diving spot usually took in one place with different operators doing helmet diving. The divers had their own underwater cameras ahd the photos and videos would be burned in a CD and given to you as a part of the package you avail from them. Your group will be really lucky if you have your own underwater camera....
one..two...three.....smile...
Sad to say, the time we had this underwater experience the dive spot was change due to some environmental reasons...although there were few fishes and some corals, but it was a bit disappointing on our side, but all in all the experience were awesome...at first i think my father would last underwater, because he could really swim, but he was the first to fo up...hehehe...and the last divers were yours truly together with my sister that we've submerged for more than 30 minutes i think...hehehehe...in short sulit na dive experience......

Wow, nice adventure. You look like an astronaut under the sea. I should try that on my next vacation in Boracay. I'm just getting cheap Boracay packages in www.boracaygo.com.
