The Hidden Gem of Nueva Ecija: Minalungao National Park

by lakwatserong tatay

So right after the christening we had attended at Gapan. Next on our itinerary was to visit the hidden gem of Nueva Ecija. Who could have thought that the province of Nueva Ecija, that is known to be as the rice paddies of our country, holds one of a kind secret of our mother nature. A great sculpture of nature that can be found in center of Peñaranda River. Has marvelous limestone that is towering 16 meters high and has calm rivers waters within Sierra Mountain Range, known as Minalungao National Park.

Pristine Calm Water of Peñaranda River
Having heard about this place to my co-bloggers last year. Seeing their shared stories about this park makes me excited to see it up close. However i'm having hard time to schedule a trip on this place, then opportunity comes because of an invite to attend christening. Seeing the chance to have additional side trip and had the chance to first set foot in Nueva Ecija makes me more excited because i'll be seeing the park at last.

The Crowded Park

Crowded Parking Area within rented nipa huts
The park covers 2018 hectares and was recognized as a protected area around 1967. Located in Brgy. Minalungao at General Tinio, Nueva Ecija.
Huge limestone within Peñaranda River

Tourists along the river
A local guide is available to guide you within the park, to the grotto, and to the cave. Our was kid named Felix. Since we have only limited time, we opted to visit the cave and experience the cool waters of Peñaranda river.
a very calm river water..

It is advisable to get a local guide because they know more about the park likewise as you help them too. In touring the park you choose between two options by foot or by boat. So if you want relaxation trip within the park, it is better to choose by boat by renting bamboo raft (please rental fees below). Or you may choose the newly cemented trail path to tour the park. Both trails will lead you to the shallow swimming area with refreshing and cool waters of the river.
the bamboo raft that cruise along the river

awesome rock formations...

our guide felix....

that's how you enjoy its cool waters....

There are so many activities available within the park, that you can choose from. There are ziplines for adventurers, bamboo rafting ride, trekking to limestone to get to the cave, trek to grotto and of course having a picnic with your families and friends.
rocky trail going to cave

one of the shallow part of the river....
As of writing, the local government is promoting this place as one of its eco-tourism destination. Rehabilitation of the road going to the park is on going. The rocky trail before is now established and already cemented path for the tourist which is younger and older ones much enjoy the scenery. The fees was different from last year as i've seen from my co-bloggers.

What i wish on this place is that hopefully when i had again the chance to visit again this place. It will be a pleasant as we've visited it. I know the park will attract more tourist and as the tourist may arise the garbage within the area may also arise. I just hope the local government, locals and tourist alike are more responsible with their own trashes. As i've seen there were actually scattered around the area from foils, plastic and even bottles. Hope that in next years to come the park will stay as is right now or few years before when it was explored and be opened to the public. Moreover, let us help the Minalungao National Park, be placed in map as one of the tourist attraction, be beautiful and as charmed right now, thus it will help more locals to their livelihood, specially to those kids like Felix, it will help them alot with schooling and families financies.
Me with our guide Felix..^_^

Nature Park Trippin is more fun in the Philippines

Minalungao National Park Rates (as of April, 2015):

Entrance Fee - php 30.00
Minulangao Cave - php 10.00
Cottage - php 200.00
Bamboo raft (small) - php 250.00
Bambbo raft (big) - php 500.00
Comfort room - php 10.00
Parking fee - php 50.00

How to get to Minalungao National Park:

By commute:
Ride a bus bound Gapan/Cabanatuan. Available bus companies from Cubao/Pasay like Five Star, ES Transport. Travel time may take from 2-3 hours.

From Gapan, you have two options, (1) ride a jeep bound to General Tinio formerly known as Papaya (not sure of the jeepney fare) and then from city proper ride a trike going to park (php50 each as per my conversation with the tricycles around the park) / (2) rent a trike from Gapan to Minalungao National Park. Estimate travel time is 1-1.5 hours (php500-600 per tricycle). This option is hassle free because you knew that there will be a tricycle waiting for you if you want to go back to city in anytime you want.

Barneys Burger @ Angono

by lakwatserong tatay

The town of Angono is not quite as big as other towns of Rizal. However, Angono is known to our country as "Art Capital of the Philippines" and also famous with its exotic restaurant. Now there's a new food chain that offers burger on its finest...one of Pampanga's Pride known as Barneys Burger....^_^

Barneys Burger
This food chain has its soft opening for 2 weeks and every night before we enter the streets towards to our house, me and wife found it interesting because there were so many diners, even though it is not big as several food chains that can be found in Angono. Two nights ago, my curiosity had ended and had the chance to savor and taste its burger patties...^_^

Barney's Burger Angono Branch
As i ask the owner, she is the one who takes the order, this branch was only a franchise and now on its soft opening, however it shows that many likes their burger, dine in or even take out orders. Based from her, Barneys Burger originated in Pampanga, and been to industry for more 20 years. Started as a local business in Guagua and heard by nearby towns and then the rest was history and now Angono was lucky to have one their branches.

Burger's all you can....^_^

Barneys Burger has a wide array of burger selection, from barneys burger to fully loaded burger, you could choose between two types of patties which is classic and supreme (this is the best & must try....^_^).
Burger prep...^_^
What i like with this burgers, it is cook while you wait. Every patties where being scooped, topped, and grilled to perfection not like the well known food chains that serves burgers. Burgers are pre-cooked, placed under heat lamps. So all of their burgers has its owns juices while you bite and you can savor its beef aroma...#saraptalaga...^_^
1/4 pound beef patties...^_^
So what we have tried and ordered are....
For me, the Bacon BBQ Burger Supreme (1/4 pound beef patty, bacon, bbq sauce, and pickles)
Barneys Bacon BBQ Burger
My wife tries their Fully Loaded Burger Supreme (1/4 pound beed patty, bacon, cheese, tomato, lettuce, cucumber)
Barneys Fully Loaded
So the final verdict, we both certainly love it. The juice that extracts while you bite is one of my most favorite part and savoring the smell of the beef is also an highlight on our burger dinner experience...^_^. So if you ask me if i will go back.....yap i would certainly do and try their other burger variance....^_^

So if your in Angono, give it a chance to visit this burger chain and maybe you could experience what me and my wife had...^_^

Pancit Center: Pancit All You Can !!!!!!

by lakwatserong tatay

Your 1st and only Pancit Specialist

Ever since i've heard of this restaurant, that is known with famous tag line "Your 1st and only Pancit Specialist". And knowing few of co-travel bloggers have experience to eat and dine in on this place. I really wanted to try it, however i'm really having a hard time to go and experience it. Luckily, something happened yesterday, and my wife given me a go signal that we could go and eat to this famous restaurant known with its different Pancit delicacies.

Pancit Center caters more than 20 pancit variants from all over the Philippines and other noodle dishes. From Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, now you can taste their respective pancit's in a very affordable price. So lucky for me, now i will have the chance to taste few of its best seller's pancit and hopefully to go back for more...^_^

Restaurant facade
Yours truly loves to eat pancit and luckily i had the chance to really taste some of the authentic pancit's that this restaurant offers. Like from Tuguegarao, Cagayan Valley's Pancit Batil Patong, Quezon's Tamis Anghang Chami and Ceb's Bam-i. So me and my decided to try it since i have already tried the authentic once....so let me start with....^_^

Pancit Batil Patong
Pancit Batil Patong from Tuguegarao, Cagayan Valley
ingredients: Batil (egg soup) & Patong, mixed vegetables, poached egg yolk, liver, ground beef and chicaron

Tamis Anghang Chami

Next was Chami from Lucena, Quezon Province known with its tamis anghang (sweet & chilly) taste
ingredients: miki noodles, chicken, cabbage and quail egg

Bam-i

Last Pancit on our table was Cebu's Bam-i
ingredients: combination of canton (egg noodles) and sotanghon (bean thread noodles), mixed vegetables and topped with shrimp

Pancit's all over the Philippines and All time favorite Pancit's
My final verdict, with those three dishes, Chami, stands out not because i like chilly dishes but it feels like i'm in Lucena while eating it and now i really miss and wanted to go back to Lucena for another trip...^_^. Second was Batil Patong, the taste was really good and somehow got the resemblance of famous Jomar's Panciteria in Tuguegarao where i had my first taste of Pancit Batil Patong and our least favorite is Cebu Bam-i, it was just like a local sotanghon pancit that could be buy on local carinderia's, as per wife says.

The happy couples at Pancit Center Pioneer Branch
So this is it, our Pancit Center series will be back for round 2 or more to try their other pancits and soups...^_^

For more information about Pancit Center. Visit their website: www.pancitcenter.com or maybe like their facebook page & upcoming promos: www.facebook.com/pancitcenter

5 Years and still X-ploring

by lakwatserong tatay

Last January 13, 2015, was the exact date were lakwatserong tatay's blog site was born. At first, the reason why i have this blog is just for a repository of my climb logs. In fact, for its first entry post, way back 2010, It was all about the four climbs that I've gone through in 2009, and then few of my colleagues ask, why just my climb/trekking activities, you may include also your backpack trips. And the rest was history. At first i was just a fan of few well known bloggers like Dom(escapeislands.com), Chyng(chyngreyes.com) and Mervin(pinoyadventurista.com). Then all of a sudden, i started sharing and now, been blogging for five years....however, my previous years was not as i've started blogging, i wasn't able to document all of my trips on this site, however, you may check me on my social media sites where i'm was always updated...^_^

So let me start with the history of X-PLORER BOYZ. Af first, were only four...Regie, Me, Jayson and Johari (left to right on the photo) and as officemates/comrades/trek buddies, we made a promise after our 1st backpack trip, that year by year our group will have a major trip that would be really cost efficient, super backpack adventures and would also cover up different provinces in every of our multi-day trips. Our first trip as X-ploreboyz covers up several town and cities in Albay and Sorsogon provinces.

X-plorerboyz @ Paguriran Island, Sorsogon
The following year, we had new addition in our group, Melvin,  as seen in the picture below he's on right side with shades. Our groups getting bigger and had two major trips on that year. First, covers several cities and towns of Northern Mindanao provinces (Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Camiguin and Lanao del Norte).

X-plorerboyz @ Mt. Vulcan, Camiguin Island
Another x-ploration happened, however, not all of the original x-plorerboyz we're present on this trip, i, the mastermind was only present...^_^. A trip to Puerto Princesa and El Nido, Palawan. And also new born x-plorers were added named as Eric, Rowel, Carlo, and Chrislon (left to right below minus the 2nd person below because its me.....^_^.

X-plorerboyz @ Snake Island, El Nido, Palawan

And then, another year added, our group's really getting bigger. Another set of trippers were added named as Coy, Ekoy, Joel, Carlo, and Shanwar (left to right in the photo, melvin & me wher also part of the pic). Missing in action are Eric, Rowel, Chrislon, Regie, Jayson and Johari..^_^. This trip happened up north in the province of Cagayan Valley.

X-plorerboyz @ Callao Cave, Peñablanca, Cagayan
And then another year added, only three of the x-plorer's (Eric, Me and Carlo) were only present for our major trip. That covers the provinces of Western Visayas Region from Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo and Negros Occidental and add up Dumaguete province. Although within the year our group managed to travel different provinces and hike different mountains.

X-plorerboyz @ Boracay Island, Station 1, Aklan

And, just last year, another trip added and the group's getting bigger....and also the members we're getting bigger..^_^. This trip was supposed to be a climb at Mt. Apo, however due to some untoward incidents, it turn's out another backpack trip adventures that covers up provinces of General Santos, Davao Region, Sultan Kudarat and Surigao del Sur...^_^. Picture was taken underwater at Enchanted River (Melvin, Shanwar, Carlo, Mhel (new x-plorer), Joel, Me, Coy, Johari and Ekoy.
X-plorerboyz @ Enchanted River, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur
However, x-plorerboyz now are not just only boys, we have x-plorergirlz...that joins us on this major trip. From left to right....Ms. Lea, Ms. Manilyn, Ms. Pearl and Ms. Nora....^_^.

X-plorergirlz @ Enchanted River, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur

So this is the life behind x-plorerboyz and now with x-plorergirlz and can be called now as "X-plorerz Group".
Cheers for the five years of traveling and non-stop exploring that our country offers. I'm happy and really proud to say that i have a travel buddies/friends like you guys. We may not see often, but we do have one goal, as my sites says....

"Our group was binded with same passion to explore, to reach new heights, to conquer one's fear, and to show the world how beautiful is our country".

It's been a privilege to have you guys as my friends/travel buddies. And it's also a privilege and a great opportunity that i as "lakwatserong tatay" ignites your passion to travel and help me to share to everyone our travel escapades for the past five years. And we all know this will not be the end!!!!

Lakwatserong Tatay with X-plorerboyz

by lakwatserong tatay

It's been five years since i've started blogging. Sharing the stories behind my backpacking adventures, trips and trek to different mountains. As of now, my dreams in fulfilling to travel all of the provinces of our country is getting near as i'm seeing my travel map's getting bluer and bluer together with my co-xplorers....^_^.

So hoping this year, 2015 would be again another fruitful year of explorations, backpack trips and trek to different heights. Although i may not do all of this without my group...my co-lakwatserong tatay's (x-plorerboyz)....^_^. We just began 5 guys as "x-plorerboyz"...and now we're getting bigger...(big narin talaga pati sa katawan. ^_^ ). As our trip from 2014, we're now 11 men, 5 tatay's, 2 we're already married last year and 4 we're still single (sabi nila...^_^...wag po magagalit mga GF's nila).

So, i would just like to start my year, in remembering the years that i've started from a tatay...now called as "lakwatserong tatay". Together also with my co-tatay's and becoming tatay's, that even if i'm not sharing all of my trips on this blog and most of them are still on backlog entries. I'm still the lakwatserong tatay you've always known. Hoping that little by little, i could make this site alive again and continue inspiring all of the tatay's around, that traveling is not that expensive, you must just have necessary plans, complete and comprehensive itineraries, and most important you must have the friends/buddies that i have...^_^.

BTW, we will have another 6 days backpack trip to Mindanao, this time we will be starting from General Santos City and exiting between two options: Dipolog or Zamboanga City, i'm just hoping to all who will see this post maybe you could help us to plan our itinerary or maybe share your thoughts or maybe your trips on this provinces....thanks again!!!!

Lakwatserong Tatay's in a 6-day Western Visayas Adventure

by lakwatserong tatay

This 6-day Western Visayas (Panay Island) Adventure was supposed to be postponed due to changes of plans. First, this was supposed to be a couples trip, three of us together with our wives. Second, financially not prepared...hehehe...however being lakwatsero's at heart we managed to solve that issue...^_^. and Lastly, mentally not prepared, however we managed to visit all of the provinces on our list although we missed some of the places we wanted to visit.

This trip happened last September 11-16, 2013. I together with Eric and Carlo was able to visit 7 provinces (Iloilo, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Guimaras, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental). Being first timers on some of the provinces, we tried to visit the most recommended places that could fit it on our tight trip itinerary. So let's start with.....

1st Day:  Touchdown Ilo-ilo, Visited the towns of Miag-ao and visited Jaro on our way to Guimaras on Day 4.

We arrive at Iloilo Airport and look for van going to Iloilo City proper and alight to the van terminal that passes by the town of Miag-ao. And visit the historical of Church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva also known as Miag-ao Church. We had some photo-opps session, in and out of the church and afterwards we said goodbye and offered prayers for our safe journey. After visiting the church we scout for a carinderia that serves local delicasies of Ilonggo's and were happy to found one just few meters away the church.

On our 4th day going to Guimaras, we managed to stroll around town of Jaro before going to the port that is going to Guimaras Island. We visited Jaro church, Iloilo City Hall and Graciano Lopez Jaena Park.

After visiting Miag-ao, we then wait along it highway and ride bus bound to San Jose, Antique and then transfer to van going to Tibiao, Antique. Upon arriving to it's crossing (forgot the name of the crossing, just tell the van driver that your going to Kayak Inn. It took us almost 3 hrs to get to Kayak Inn coming from Miag-ao due to some stops and waiting for passengers to fill in the van ride going to Tibiao. Our first overnight stay (kubo type accommodation) for our trip is Kayak Inn.

After having two memorable activities in Tibiao. We had an early dinner of Sinigang na Baboy (paluto again). We ended our night by having few drinks (red horse)....hehehehe...Ended the night early and had a very good sleep.

2nd Day: My second time in Boracay, Aklan.

We got up early and had our breakfast. But before saying goodbye, we visit first the Hanging Bridge to enjoy the lush greenery view and surroundings and few photo opps in Tibiao River.

We fetch again by our hired habal-habal up to Tibiao town proper. We wait for the bus bound to Caticlan. Me and Eric are not first timers on Boracay, however Carlo is virgin on this island...hehehehe. He wanted to try Boracay in a chillax way. So upon arriving Caticlan port, we immediately pay necessary fees and go to the boat waiting for passengers.

Our initial plan is to stay in Kalibo, however due to request of Carlo, he wanted to see Boracay by night. So for our 2nd day accommodation, we choose to stay in Boracay Courtyard sister hotel of the La Carmela de Boracay Resort Hotel. After settling our backpacks on our room, we immediately change our outfit to swimming attire. Were on swimming mode that time, strolled around from Station 1 up to midway of Station 3. After breakfast, we had last minute shopping and off to our next destination. To visit and stay for a night in Capiz. We were able to visit to of its towns, Sta. Monica and Roxas City.

Upon arriving at van terminal in Roxas City, Capiz, we look and ask around how to get to Sta. Monica Church known in having the Biggest Catholic Church Bell in Asia. However most of the locals recommends that we should rent a tricycle and we could include a city tour around Roxas City. So we hired a tricycle for our half day quickie tour of the two places.

For our quickie city tour in Roxas City, we strolled around Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Capitol Building, its park, rotonda and Roxas bridge. After doing city tour our trike driver recommends Asia Novotel for our cheap accommodation, since it was near the city center....^_^

Upon arriving in Bacolod via fastcraft ferry ride in Iloilo, we hurriedly look for jeepney that is going to city proper. Luckily there was a private pickup type that get passengers for a minimal amount. Upon reaching Bacolod city proper, we had a quick city tour, buy pasalubongs in Bongbong's and have lunch at SM Bacolod.
After having all of that activity we proceed to our next destination. In the town of Murcia, where Mambukal Resort is located, we will visit the famous 7 waterfalls, however due to time constraint, were just able to visit 6 of its 7 falls. We intended to go back to city and transfer to our next destination which is town of Silay for the Mansion Ruins. However due to untoward bus ride experience, who would not be pissed of, from Mambukal Resort where minibus terminal going to Libertad Terminal, Bacolod. We travel for almost 3 hours if im not mistaken. We arrived at Bacolod kind a late and the weather did not actually going to favor on our side. So we decided not to proceed for our next destination because it was too dark and just stay again in SM Bacolod to waste few hours. We had dinner there and stroll around. And then proceed to Ceres Bus Terminal bound for Dumaguete.

Around 12 midnight is the schedule of bus bound to Dumaguete. Approximately we will travel for 5-6 hours depending how the bus will be driving. However, were so happy that our bus driver that time was kind a fast and furious mode, we arrive at Dumaguete quite early.

Right afterwards, after having breakfast at Atong Kamalig Restaurant near Silliman University, we toured inside Silliman University took some photo opps, talk to some of the students and relax, sit and stayed on their amphitheater. After looking back on our school day memories at Silliman University. We then walk towards to Dumaguete's Baywalk, and right afterwards, we go to Sansrival Restaurant to buy the famous pasalubong in Dumaguete's "Sansrival". Right after tasting sweet delicacies, we then ride a tricycle going to Robinson's Place Dumaguete since our flight is around 4pm in the afternoon. We just savor our time at Robinson's Place.

After having good time in the mall, and my co-traveler buy sunglasses on one of the stores inside Robinson's Place. By the 230pm, we exited the mall and traveled via tricycle from Robinson's Place Dumaguete to Dumaguete Airport. Were bit early as our plane back to Manila scheduled around 350pm.
